About Crested Geckos (Correlophus ciliatus)

The crested gecko is a small arboreal gecko from New Caledonia, named for the fringe of skin that runs from each eye down the sides of the neck and back. Adults reach about 4 to 4.5 inches snout-to-vent (around 8 inches with tail) and a healthy weight of roughly 35 to 55 grams. With good care they live 15 to 20 years or more.

They earned their place as the second most-kept pet gecko for good reasons. They are hardy, tolerate a range of room conditions, and eat a complete powdered diet instead of requiring live insects (though certainly recommended to supplement with some live insects). They are calm and generally handleable, though they will jump. Their big eyes, lashes, and expressive faces do a lot of the selling on their own. They are crepuscular, most active around dusk and dawn, and spend the day sleeping in foliage.

One quirk to know up front: crested geckos can drop their tails, and unlike most geckos the tail does not grow back. A tailless crestie (a "frog butt") is normal and healthy. Most wild adults are tailless.


Basic Care

Enclosure

One adult needs at minimum an 18 x 18 x 24 inch enclosure; current best practice is 24 x 24 x 24 inches or larger. Height matters more than floor space for this arboreal species, so prioritize vertical room and fill it with branches, cork bark, vines, and dense foliage (live or artificial) for climbing and hiding. Juveniles can start in smaller enclosures and move to adult housing at around 10 grams.

Keep crested geckos singly unless you have a specific reason not to. Never house two males together. Pairs and groups can and do injure each other.

Temperature

Crested geckos want mild temperatures with a gentle gradient:

- Warm area: 78 to 85 F, best provided with a low-wattage halogen or similar overhead heat near the top of the enclosure - Cool area: 70 to 75 F - Night: 65 to 72 F; brief dips into the 60s are tolerated

Heat is the bigger danger. Sustained temperatures above the mid-80s F cause stress and can kill. If your home runs warm, cooling the room matters more than any bulb. Sustained daytime temps at or below about 72 F lead to lethargy and poor appetite.

Humidity

Aim for a humidity cycle, not a constant number. Mist heavily in the evening so humidity spikes to 70 to 80 percent, then let the enclosure dry down to around 50 percent before misting again. Constant saturation causes mold, skin infections, and respiratory problems; constant dryness causes stuck sheds. Many geckos drink primarily by licking mist droplets from leaves, so keep a shallow water dish available as a backup.

Lighting and UVB

Older care sheets said crested geckos need no UVB. Current guidance has shifted: low-level UVB is recommended. A low-output UVB lamp (for example a 5 to 7 percent T5 in the Arcadia ShadeDweller class), positioned so the basking branch gets a low UV index, supports natural vitamin D3 synthesis. A daylight-spectrum LED alongside it helps live plants and gives a clear day-night cycle. Run lights about 12 hours a day, or 14 in summer and 10 in winter if you want seasonal variation.

Diet

The staple is a complete powdered crested gecko diet (CGD) mixed with water to a smoothie consistency. Pangea and Repashy are the long-standing standards; Vitameal, Arcadia, Zoo Med, and others also make complete formulas. Offer fresh CGD every other day for adults (daily for growing juveniles) and remove old food before it sours.

Insects are optional but beneficial, especially for growing animals and breeding females: crickets, dubia roaches (not fully grown), or black soldier fly larvae once or twice a week for juveniles, up to once a week for adults. Gut-load feeders for 24 to 48 hours and dust with calcium (with D3 if you run no UVB, without if you do), sized no bigger than the space between the gecko's eyes.

Do not feed baby food or plain fruit as a staple. That practice caused a generation of metabolic bone disease before complete diets existed.

Substrate

Use a moisture-holding substrate such as coco fiber and larger orchid-style bark or a soil mix, 2 to 4+ inches deep. For hatchlings, small juveniles (under about 13 grams), and quarantine, paper towel is safer and easier to monitor.

Handling

Give a new gecko two to four weeks to settle before handling. Keep sessions short (a few minutes at first), stay low over a couch or bed, and let the gecko walk hand-over-hand rather than restraining it. Never grab or restrain the tail. Expect jumping; it is normal, not a sign of distress.


Taxonomy

The crested gecko was described by Alphonse Guichenot in 1866 as Correlophus ciliatus, then folded into Rhacodactylus by Boulenger in 1883, which is why older books and much of the hobby still say "Rhacodactylus ciliatus."

In 2012, Bauer, Jackman, Sadlier, and Whitaker published a revision of the New Caledonian giant geckos (Zootaxa 3404) showing that Rhacodactylus as then defined was not a natural group. The crested gecko was returned to Correlophus, alongside C. sarasinorum and the newly described C. belepensis. The same revision moved the mossy prehensile-tailed gecko to Mniarogekko chahoua and left true Rhacodactylus with the giants, including the leachianus. The family is Diplodactylidae, the diplodactylid geckos of Australasia.


History in the Pet Trade

The crested gecko has one of the stranger histories in herpetoculture. After its description in 1866 it went essentially unrecorded for over a century and was widely presumed extinct.

In 1994 an expedition led by German herpetologist Robert Seipp rediscovered the species in southern New Caledonia. Follow-up expeditions the same era, including collecting trips associated with Philippe de Vosjoli and Frank Fast and academic work by Aaron Bauer, brought a limited number of animals legally to Europe and the United States before New Caledonia stopped issuing export permits.

Those few founders turned out to be prolific and easy to keep, and within a decade the crested gecko went from "extinct" to a pet-trade staple. Today virtually every crested gecko in the trade is captive-bred, generations removed from the wild.

The wild picture is less cheerful. The species is protected in New Caledonia and wild export is prohibited; the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable with declining populations, threatened by the invasive little fire ant, habitat degradation, introduced rodents, and reported illegal collection. A CITES listing has been proposed but is not currently in force, so captive-bred trade continues unrestricted in most countries.


Wild Types in New Caledonia vs Morphs

Wild crested geckos live in three separated populations in New Caledonia's South Province: one on the Isle of Pines and nearby islets, and two on southern Grande Terre at localities such as Riviere Bleue, Mont Koghis, and Mont Dzumac. They occupy the understory and lower canopy of humid forest.

Wild animals are comparatively plain: brown, olive, and buckskin tones in roughly three natural forms (patternless, white-fringed, and tiger). Most wild adults have no tail. Nothing in the wild looks like an extreme harlequin or a lilly white; every high-color, high-pattern animal in the hobby is the product of about three decades of selective breeding from that small founder stock.

That contrast is worth keeping in mind: "wild type" in cresties means a subtle, earth-toned animal, and the flashy trade standard is an artifact of captivity.


Morph Examples

Most classic crested gecko traits are polygenic and line-bred, meaning they run on a spectrum shaped by selective pairing rather than flipping on and off like simple genes. A few newer traits are proven single-gene morphs.

Line-bred and polygenic traits

- Patternless: a single solid body color such as olive, buckskin, red, yellow, or near-black. Closest to wild type. - Bicolor: dorsum a different shade than the body, with minimal other pattern. - Flame: cream or contrasting pattern along the dorsum with clean sides. - Harlequin: flame plus heavy cream or orange patterning on the sides and limbs. Extreme harlequins push that coverage further. Flame, harlequin, and extreme are one continuum of increasing expression. - Tiger and brindle: dark vertical banding; brindle is the broken, marbled version. - Pinstripe: raised cream scales in lines along the dorsal edges. Full pinstripes are unbroken, partials are broken, phantoms have the raised structure without the cream, and quad-stripes add two lateral lines. - Dalmatian: ink spots in black, red, green, or white; heavily spotted animals (around 100 spots or more) are sold as super dalmatians. - Tricolor: harlequin or pinstripe pattern in three distinct colors. - Base color lines: red, yellow, orange, lavender, and near-black are intensified by line breeding. All cresties "fire up" and "fire down," shifting color dramatically with mood and time of day, so evaluate an animal in both states.

Proven single-gene morphs

- Lilly white (incomplete dominant, from Lilly Exotics in the UK, circa 2012): one copy produces a high-white gecko. Two copies are lethal; homozygous offspring die in the egg or shortly after hatching. - Axanthic (recessive): strips red and yellow, leaving a grey, black, and white gecko. - Cappuccino (incomplete dominant, a melanistic "sable" type line): one copy makes a distinctive brown gecko. The homozygous super cappuccino has documented defects, including pinched nostrils, fluid-filled "spectacle" eyes, spinal kinks, and early death. - Frappuccino: the cappuccino plus lilly white combination, and it carries the pairing risks of both genes.

There are more available morphs being discovered every year.


Overbreeding Concerns

Crested geckos breed easily, and that is exactly the problem. A single female produces a dozen or more eggs a season, the market is saturated with pet-quality animals, and experienced breeders openly advise against producing animals without a plan for where they will go. Before pairing anything, it is fair to ask what these offspring add and who is taking them.

The designer-gene era added sharper ethical questions:

- Lilly white to lilly white pairings knowingly produce roughly 25 percent lethal offspring. The community consensus is simple: never do it. - Cappuccino to cappuccino pairings produce super cappuccinos with serious documented defects. These pairings are increasingly condemned for the same reason. - Lineage tracking is thin across the hobby, so inbreeding accumulates quietly. Kinked spines and tails and poor bone structure show up disproportionately in heavily line-bred stock.

Floppy tail syndrome (FTS), where the tail flops over the back when the gecko rests head-down, deserves a fair summary: it was long blamed on calcium deficiency, but current evidence does not support MBD as the cause. The leading explanations are habitual sleeping head-down on smooth glass plus a possible heritable pelvic component. It is mostly cosmetic, it does not reverse, and animals with FTS or pelvic rotation should not be bred.

None of this means breeding cresties is wrong. It means the bar should be intent: healthy, unrelated, well-conditioned animals, no known-harmful gene pairings, and homes lined up before eggs are in the incubator.


Advanced Care and Husbandry

Bioactive and planted setups

Crested geckos are an ideal bioactive species. Build on a drainage layer with 3 or more inches of tropical soil mix, seed it with springtails and dwarf isopods as a cleanup crew, and plant hardy species such as pothos, ficus, dracaena, bromeliads, and ferns. A working bioactive enclosure stabilizes humidity, processes waste, and gives the gecko a more natural structure to navigate. Pair it with the daylight LED from the lighting section so the plants actually grow.

Seasonal cycling

Mirroring New Caledonia's mild seasons, drop temperatures a few degrees and shorten the photoperiod (around 10 hours) in winter, then lengthen it (up to 14 hours) in summer. Pets do fine without cycling, but breeding females need the winter rest, and many keepers see better appetite and behavior with a seasonal rhythm.

Weight and body condition

Weigh monthly. Healthy adults run roughly 35 to 55 grams, with males typically on the lighter end and breeding females heavier. Watch trends rather than single readings: steady loss means a vet visit or husbandry review, and obesity is a real issue in adults pushing past 60 grams, especially males. Hatchlings start at 1.5 to 2 grams and take 12 to 18 months or more to reach adult weight; slow, steady growth is normal.

Common health issues

- Metabolic bone disease: still the most common serious problem, driven by unsupplemented or incomplete diets. Prevented entirely by a complete CGD, proper dusting, and low-level UVB. - Egg binding: affects females bred underweight, calcium-depleted, or without a proper lay site. - Heat stress: sustained mid-80s F and above; this species overheats before most keepers expect. - Stuck shed (dysecdysis): a humidity-cycle problem; check toes and tail tip after sheds. - Impaction: a risk for small animals on loose substrate; keep geckos under about 13 grams on paper towel. - Tail loss: dramatic but not an emergency. Keep the wound clean; the tail does not return.

Find an exotics vet before you need one, and quarantine new animals away from existing collections for 60 to 90 days.


Breeding

Do not breed a female before she is both at least 35 grams and around 18 months old; 40 grams or more is the safer modern standard. Underweight females are the ones that end up egg-bound or calcium-crashed. Males mature smaller, around 25 to 30 grams.

Pairing and laying

Introduce one male to a female and supervise early interactions; neck-biting during courtship is normal, sustained aggression is not. Once bred, a female can retain sperm and lay fertile clutches for a year or more after the male is removed, so pair records matter longer than the pairing.

A breeding female lays 2 eggs per clutch (occasionally 1) every 4 to 6 weeks, commonly 6 to 9 clutches per season. That is a serious calcium drain: feed a breeder-formula CGD, offer dusted insects, and check her calcium sacs (inside the roof of the mouth) through the season. Provide a lay box with 2 to 4 inches of moist coco fiber; without one she may retain eggs or scatter them.

Incubation

Eggs incubate at room temperature in a slightly moist medium such as vermiculite or perlite. The sweet spot is 70 to 75 F, hatching in roughly 60 to 90 days; cooler "low and slow" incubation in the high 60s takes 100 days or more and tends to produce larger, sturdier hatchlings. Sustained temperatures above 80 F risk dead-in-egg embryos and weak or deformed hatchlings; treat 82 F as the ceiling. Unlike leopard geckos, sex is not clearly temperature-determined.

Hatchlings and rest

House hatchlings individually (or in small same-size groups) in small containers on paper towel with high humidity. They live off yolk until their first shed, around day 2 or 3, then take CGD; tiny dusted insects are optional. Expect a year or more to salable or breedable size.

Give breeding females a 2 to 4 month winter rest each year: separate the male, cool the enclosure slightly, and shorten the photoperiod so she can rebuild weight and calcium. Running females year-round is exploitative and shortens their productive lives.

Before any pairing, recheck the genetics: no lilly white to lilly white, no cappuccino to cappuccino without accepting the documented defect risk, no breeding animals with FTS, kinks, or poor bone density, and no clutches you do not have homes for.


Choosing a Healthy Crested Gecko

Buy captive-bred from a breeder who can tell you the animal's weight, hatch date, and lineage. A healthy crestie has bright clear eyes, a straight spine and hips, all toes gripping well, a filled-out (not bony, not obese) body, and no kinks in the tail or pelvis. Ask to see photos of the animal fired up and down before paying morph prices, be skeptical of miracle labels like moonglow, and expect honest breeders to volunteer known genes (lilly white, cappuccino) because they change how the animal can responsibly be bred.
